MOLLY O’DWYER – Awaiting Movement

Vernissage: Do, 06.09.2012, 19 Uhr

Molly O’Dwyer: Awaiting Movement

Molly O’Dwyer: Awaiting Movement

This exhibition combines the use of video, performance and photography made on location in both Ireland and Iceland. These works seek to explore ideas of Instability and isolation, stasis and movement, the figure ultimately defined by its surrounding environment. Awaiting Movement suggests progress

Both mediums of photography and video also work to play off one another physically in the space. Photography- representing a still moment in time and video being the opposite- essentially the passing and capturing of time. Placed together, these works also open up a social and political dialogue in terms of the crisis situation in which the two countries found themselves in recent times. Unfinished housing developments, corruption and a halt to progress due to recession.

Meltdown

Filmed in a number of sites in Dublin City from a roundabout to a ‘ghost’ housing estate. The body and the environment surrounding it are core elements in the work with objects and machinery such as cranes, building materials and planes impinging on the space of the figure alluding to a certain resonance of the current economic crisis in Ireland. Time and space are examined as the figure sits, waiting in silence and isolation on a manmade island in the centre of the road. Both humour and tragedy are constantly at play through the co- existence of order and chaos.

Awaiting Movement: Reykyavik

Performed in Iceland in August 2011. The figure, sits motionless on a domestic chair on the ledge of an unfinished abandoned building site located in Reykyavik harbour- a symbol and reminder of the recent economic crash akin to that found in Ireland.
